After breaking in to the national music scene at age 15 with her song 'Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking),' which she was invited to perform by Leonard Bernstein on his television show Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution, she became an overnight sensation, assisted by the song's taboo subject matter, about interracial romance. But she quickly receded from the limelight, only to come back again and again. Born Janis Eddy Fink in 1951 in New York City, she took her brother's middle name for her stage name, and it was while performing in the city's clubs that she had her star turn. Following her popular fade, she recorded three more albums as a teenager, giving all the proceeds away to friends and charities, then got married and announced her retirement from music at age 20. Following a divorce, she moved to California and emerged with her album Stars, which featured the song 'Jesse, later turned into a hit by Roberta Flack. Ian had her biggest success in 1975 with Between the Lines, featuring the Top Ten hit 'At Seventeen,' for which she won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance. Ian has continued performing and recording ever since, though record sales lagged again following her biggest hit.
