After a decade of success and five studio albums with the John Butler Trio, singer, songwriter and guitarist John Butler continues to push for the discovery of new sound combinations, new timbres, new effects, rhythms and lyrical territory. His latest album with the trio, April Uprising, released in 2010, displays his interest in and ability to adapt his approaches to songwriting. The song 'Revolution' is typical of the depth that Butler shoots for in his songs, and its thoughtful delivery exemplifies his performance style. April Uprising is the John Butler Trio's fifth album. Buter, who was born in 1975 in Torrance, California, but moved to Australia in 1986 and grew up there, in Fremantle. He began playing guitar at age 16, and busked the streets of Fremantle for several years, incorporating Indian, Celtic, bluegrass and folk styles into his unique songs. He started the John Butler Trio in 1998 with Jason McGann on drums and Gavin Shoesmith on bass, both of whom have since been replaced, by Nicky Bomba, drums, and Byron Luiters, bass, another conscious move by Butler to keep expanding and exploring new possibilities with different combinations of musicians. After releasing their first album, John Butler in 1998 on Waterfront Records, the band toured through Western Australia with a much harder-edged sound than the current trio. Their second album, Three, released in 2001, raised the band's profile with the singles 'Take' and 'Betterman,' a bluesy jam that showed off Butler's guitar chops.
