He was hired as a songwriter, at age 18, after moving to Nashville, Tennessee, before he became a performer. But he began performing his songs in Nashville clubs and earned a record deal with Epic Records in 1973. Since his first album, Hangin' Around the Observatory, he has recorded 18 more, garnering numerous awards along the way.
