    Girl trouble leads to Swift' descent for John Mayer (Updated December 5, 2012)

    Once known as a sensitive, even reclusive acoustic artist, John Mayer was thrust into the spotlight by a very public ending to a private relationship with Taylor Swift. Mayer said the country-pop songstress "really humiliated" him when she penned a tune for her best-selling 2010 album "Speak Now," which was released shortly after Mayer went on an extended hiatus following controversial interviews with Rolling Stone and Playboy.

    But has the press been so bad? Since 2001, Mayer has released five studio albums, starting with "Room for Squares" and culminating with "Born and Raised" in May 2012. He has sold over 10 million albums in the U.S. and more than 20 million worldwide, and has collaborated with renowned blues artists like B.B. King and Eric Clapton.

    Mayer calls his third album "Continuuum" his best one, as it combined his signature sound with the feel and grove of blues music. "Waiting on the World to Change" was a smash out of the gate, becoming one of the most downloaded songs on iTunes and bowing at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. It took on a life of its own, eventually helping to nab Mayer five 2007 Grammy Awards. Another song from the project, "Gravity," was featured on the FOX television series "House" and the CBS series "Numb3rs."

    Mayer has toured with many different artists and groups, including the likes of Sheryl Crow, Colbie Caillat, Train, Maroon 5, One Republic and many more. In 2010, he teamed up with country star Keith Urban for a CMT Crossroads concert, which led to the duo performing at the 2010 CMT Music Awards. Mayer has also been known to show up at small venues unannounced for surprise concerts. He scrapped his most recent tour after having vocal cord surgery, but recently joined the lineup for Clapton's 2013 Crossroads Guitar Festival.
