Blues guitarist Johnny Winter is a survivor, but he's much more than that. One of the most gifted blues rockers ever to strap on a guitar, Winter has been on top of the rock world, such as when he first signed with Columbia Records for the largest sum ever paid to a new solo artist, and he has been on the bottom, such as when he suspended his career to head back home to Texas to nurse his heroin addiction. Through it all, Winter has refused to stop making music, usually the kind that revs up the crowds with his over-the-top brand of driving bluesy rock and roll. Born in 1944, Johnny Winter was encouraged as a young musician, along with his younger brother, rock keyboardist Edgar Winter. The brothers, who both were born with albinism, formed a band, when Johnny was age 15, called Johnny and the Jammers. In 1968, Winter signed with Columbia and recorded his self-titled debut album, released in 1969. As Winter's stock grew, his older recordings, with a group called the Progressive Blues Experiment, began getting snatched up for release, and have accompanied his entire career. Winter performed at Woodstock in 1969 and recorded his second album, Second Winter, before forming a new group, Johnny Winter And, with guitarist Rick Derringer and bassist Randy Jo Hobbs. The band's first, self-titled album included Derringer's song 'Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo' and steered toward the blues rock Winter would come to be known for. More than 20 albums and several Grammy Awards later, Winter continues to rock the house, and Johnny Winter tickets are a chance to see one of the best blues rockers on stage.
