The melding of traditional country music with arena rock, a touch of reggae, and just a little more than a small spritz of the islands may not look like a winning combination on paper, but it's a sound that has become a trademark of one of music's most dynamic stars.
Kenny Chesney, who grew up in the blink-and-you'll-miss-it town of Luttrell, Tennessee, has churned out 15 studio albums in a career that has spanned over two decades. The combined efforts have produced more than 30 Top Ten singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, 22 of which made the climb all the way to No. 1. But if it sounds like the ?Stadium King' has had an easy ride to the top, guess again.
Million-ticket selling tours were probably far from Kenny's mind when he left his first Music Row audition in 1992 with a songwriter's contract in hand. Though he released the aptly named 'In My Wildest Dreams' on an independent label two years later, the album's dismal sales were no indication of the career that lay ahead.
Landing on his feet with BNA Records ultimately proved to be the stepping stone Kenny needed. He released 'All I Need to Know' as his first major-label album, producing three hit singles. 'Fall in Love'' and 'All I Need to Know' both cracked the Top Ten, and a follow-up project in 1995 became Kenny's first gold-certified album. The title track, 'Me and You' and 'When I Close My Eyes' not only struck a cord with fans, but a mix of romantic ballads and fun, upbeat tracks carried Chesney into the turn of the century on a high note.
Kenny officially became country music's ?It Man' in 2002, tweaking an already winning formula for the release of 'No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems.' He followed it in 2004 with 'When The Sun Goes Down,' and the beach bum rhythms, belting anthems and the aching sentimentality of those title tracks and other cuts like 'The Good Stuff' and 'I Go Back,' became the mark of a seasoned singer, songwriter and entertainer. He captured awards from the likes of the Academy of Country Music (ACM), Country Music Association (CMA), American Music Awards and the People's Choice while regularly selling out venues around the world.
Chesney's latest record, 'Welcome to the Fishbowl,' bowed June 19 and sparked what could be his biggest tour ever. The 'Brothers of the Sun Tour,' in which Kenny shares top billing with friend and fellow superstar Tim McGraw, kicked off June 2. It will continue to hit stadiums through the summer, wrapping with back-to-back shows at Gilette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on August 24 and 25th.
