Los Angeles Lakers News: Regular Season and Preseason Updates
2/28/13: the Lakers are trying to get back in the mix for the playoffs, and certainly the media is following every single move they make. L.A. had won 11 of 14 games to get back within striking distance, including a win at the wire against Dallas on Sunday afternoon on a nationally televised game. But they could not follow that up the next day against the Denver Nuggets, who simply ran the Lakers off the court with their youth and rest. L.A. is three points out of a playoff spot now. There is still time to get back into the mix, but the season is dwindling down.
2/21/13: The dysfunction continues for the L.A. Lakers, as center Dwight Howard and franchise leader Kobe Bryant continue to feud. The latest reports include Dwight ridiculing Kobe with other players at the All-Star Game, while Kobe completely avoided Dwight. But there was real tragedy in L.A. last week, as long-time owner Dr. Jerry Buss died. Buss bought the franchise, along with the L.A. Kings and L.A. Forum in 1979. Now the team is worth over a billion dollars, and many consider Buss the greatest team owner in history. The Lakers won their first game after Buss' death.
8/10/12 ? After a year of watching and waiting, the Los Angeles Lakers have finally acquired center Dwight Howard in a 4-team offseason deal. The Lakers will receive Howard, the Denver Nuggets will get Andre Iguodala, the Philadelphia 76ers will pick up Andrew Bynum and Jason Richardson, and the Magic will receive Arron Afflalo, Al Harrington, Nikola Vucevic, and a future first-round pick from each of the three teams. Howard averaged 20.6 ppg and 14.5 rpg in a season where he made it no secret he wanted to leave Orlando. He was drafted first overall by the Magic in the 2004 NBA Draft. In eight seasons with the Magic, Howard was a three-time defensive player of the year and six- time NBA All-Star. He will join Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and a recently acquired Steve Nash.
The Los Angeles Lakers will open the 2012-2013 NBA season against the Dallas Mavericks. The new NBA schedule was released on Thursday and the Lakers will open up their season on October 30th at the Staples Center against Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs. The Lakers are still in the hunt for Dwight Howard as the offseason wears on and the Dwight Howard saga continues, with no foreseeable end in sight. Reports that surfaced earlier claimed that the Lakers were offering to give up center Andrew Bynum in exchange for Howard, however those rumors never materialized.
5/25/12 The Los Angeles Lakers could not hold off the Oklahoma City Thunder and fell in 5 games with a 106-90 loss on Monday night to end their season. Kobe Bryant put up a valiant effort to keep the Lakers' season alive with 42 points and 5 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for Los Angeles. The Lakers will have a lot of questions to answer going into the offseason, namely regarding their free agents and addressing their needs in various positions heading into the 2012-2013 season. They hope to retool through the upcoming draft and fill in some holes in a few areas of need during free agency and return even stronger next season.
5/18/12 The Los Angeles Lakers led for most of Game 2, but down the stretch they squandered a 7-point lead with under 2 minutes to go and fell 77-75 to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum each had 20 points for the Lakers and Pau Gasol added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Down the stretch however, Bryant was mostly ineffective, and the game-tying shot was left to role player Steve Blake. The Lakers will now head back home to the comfy confines of the Staples Center for Games 3 and 4 and will need to find an answer for neutralizing the effectiveness of Durant and Westbrook if they want to extend this series.
5/10/12: After scoring 31 and 38 points in the Los Angeles Lakers' two wins, Kobe Bryant was limited to 7 of 23 shooting and 22 points in Game 3 as the Los Angeles Lakers suffered their first defeat of the postseason.
