A History of Lynyrd Skynyrd tickets

It's simple: when you think Southern Rock, you think Lynyrd Skynyrd. The consummate Southern Rock band recorded two of the biggest hits in the history of rock: 'Freebird,' a tribute to guitarist Gregg Allman, is considered by many one of the greatest rock songs of all time; and 'Sweet Home Alabama,' a tongue-in-cheek poke at the South, was an even a bigger hit. But Lynyrd Skynyrd knows hits. The band cranked out one after another during a hot ten-year stretch in the 1970s, and even produced another, 'Help Somebody,' off their 2005 album Get Right with the Man. Lynyrd Skynyrd (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd as the title of their first album explains) was formed in 1965 in Jacksonville, Florida, when a group of high school friends got together and settled on the name that makes fun of their redneck gym teacher, Leonard Skinner.

Tragedy Strikes

With their early albums, the debut, and Second Helping (1974), they established a strong following, made stronger with albums soon to follow, Gimme Back My Bullets (1976) and Street Survivors (1977). Then tragedy struck when lead man Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines died in an airplane crash, which seriously injured other band members. But the band bounced back and today's Lynyrd Skynyrd delivers the same hard-stompin, guitar-laden, classic Southern sound that the band has always been known for.
