Marc Anthony - Top Selling Tropical Salsa Artist of All Time

He is a singer, songwriter, actor and producer who ranks as the top-selling tropical salsa artist of all time. Yet Marc Anthony's career achievements have often been overshadowed by his former marriage to superstar and fellow Puerto Rican musician Jennifer Lopez.

Anthony (born Marco Antonio Muñiz) was discovered as a teen and began his career as a session vocalist and house act for Underground New York. After a composition for school friend Sa-Fire became a Top 40 hip-hop hit, he sang background vocals on her debut album. He then went on to work with the Latin Rascals and Menudo.

Anthony's debut album, "When the Night is Over," bowed in 1991 as a mix of Latin hip-hop. The sophomore effort, "Otra Nota," was said to be a better representation of Anthony's salsa roots. He didn't move for an English-language album release until a self-titled project in 1999. The single "I Need to Know" reached the Top Ten of the main Billboard album chart, peaking at number three.

Thus far, Anthony's profile has mostly been raised by his Spanish-language albums and crossover into acting. He had supporting roles in films like "Hackers," "Big Night" and "The Substitute" in the late 90's, and in 2004 shared a leading role opposite Denzel Washington in "Man on Fire." Anthony also starred in "El Cantante," a biographical drama about the life of salsa music legend Hector Lavoe that received strong reviews.

Anthony is currently working with ex-wife Lopez and director-choreographer Jamie King on a Latin talent series created by Simon Fuller, called "Q'Viva! The Chosen." It follows Lopez and Anthony as they travel across 21 countries to find new talent.
