Recap 11/01/2012: On Sunday, the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 in an extra innings affair at Comerica Park. While the Tigers fought until the bitter end, there was always no doubt that this was the Giant's year. Miracle after miracle in the playoffs culminated in a laugher of a series against the Tigers.

For the Tiger's high-powered (and high-priced) payroll, falling meekly on the world's biggest stage has to be a disappointment. The heart of the lineup, namely Miguel Cabrera and Pricine Fielder, stayed quiet all series. The duo combined for a total of 4 hits through the entire series. Even some of the blame has to go to Tiger's ace Justin Verlander, probably the surest bet to take the mound in all of baseball. Verlander only managed to last four innings in his only start in game one.

To the spoils go the victors, and the Giants sure are lavishing in it right now. Primary praise goes to Series MVP Pablo Sandoval, who hit .500 over the series and set the tone of the Giant's rout with his three home run onslaught in game one. This is the Giant's second World Series title within the last three years. Many are starting to whisper the beginnings of a dynasty. For manager Bruce Bochy, this is also his second World Series win along with the NL pennant he led the Padres to in 1998. While it is too premature to write his Hall of Fame plaque, he certainly has the makings of a qualified resume.

Recap 10/24/2012: The past week saw the close of the league championship series games and we can look ahead to the World Series now. The matchup will of course be the Detroit Tigers versus the San Francisco Giants, two teams that took polar opposite paths to reach the grandest stage.

The Tigers had very little trouble dispatching the beleaguered New York Yankees. The Tigers had a clean four-game sweep, allowing only six runs over the set. Compared to the rollercoaster Detroit had against the Athletics the previous round, the Tigers took care of business with ease over the Yankees, who held the best record in the American League. Detroit DH Delmon Young won the ALCS MVP award, with big hit after big hit. In fact, Young was the first player ever with four game-winning RBIs in one postseason series. The Tigers now make a return trip to the World Series, their first visit since they lost it in 2006.

Over in the NL, what hasn't been said about the Giants? Of course, the Giants stormed back to win three elimination games against the Reds in the NLDS. What would they do for an encore? How about the exact same thing? Down three games to one against the Cardinals, things were bleak and it seemed as if St. Louis would be making a repeat trip to the World Series. However the never-say-die Giants refused to pack it up and used three dominating pitching performances in a row to stage the comeback. Infielder Marco Scutaro won the NLC MVP award with multiple hits in six out of the seven games.

The Giants and the Tigers are sure to provide an exciting world series, with the Giants having the home-field advantage.

Recap 10/18/2012: The past week saw the close of one of the most exciting divisional rounds in league history. Every single series went the five-game distance, producing drama, heartbreak and controversy. In the AL, the New York Yankees used a dominant game by CC Sabathia to secure the series in the deciding against the upstart Orioles. A similar story played out over another Cinderella team, as the Oakland A's fell to the Tiger's stuff ace in Justin Verlander. In the NL, the Giants won three in a row to complete the comeback against the Reds, who won the first two of the series. The Cardinals meanwhile were perhaps the heroes of the divisional round, as they bottled some of their post-season magic from last year to come back from a 6-0 deficit in game five against the Nationals. The Cardinals scored four in the top of the ninth to complete one of the gamest comebacks in league history. With the league championship series games in full swing, it has been a mixed bag to say the least. The Yankee's cold bats have not improved, as they have scored only 5 runs in the first three games against the Tigers. The Yankees are down three games to nothing, and it would take an all-time miracle for them to dig themselves out of the hole. The Cardinals and Giants are engaged in a spirited series. The games have been closely contested, and looks destined to go all seven. The Cardinals hold a 2-1 lead the series, giving them the home-field advantage.

Recap 10/11/2012: The start of the 2012 MLB playoffs has been filled with both surprise and an overload of tension. This is the first year of the Wild Card round, pitting the top two non-division champion teams in each respective league. In the AL, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington 5-1. For the Orioles, unlikely hero Joe Saunders only allowed one run, leading the Orioles on one of the most unlikely rides in MLB history.

Over in the NL, the Atlanta Braves and the defending champions St. Louis Cardinals faced off at Turner Field. This game showcased the chief complaint of the one-game elimination system: that baseball has not historically based things on a single game, but rather a series, due to the nature of the sport. A controversial infield fly rule in the 8th inning killed a Braves' rally, with the score ending at 6-3. The game was protested but to no avail.

With the field set, the Divisional rounds have been tense and competitive. As of the morning of 10/11, every division series is still either deadlocked at two games a piece or with one team winning two to one. There will be no easy sweeps this year. The A's in particular are continuing their miracle run, losing the first two games in their series again the Detroit Tigers but have fought back to tie it after a meltdown by Detroit closer Jose Valverde in game four. Within the next few days, the League Championship Series match ups will be set, continuing a season that has defied expectations.

Recap 10/4/2012The close of the 2012 MLB regular season was short on thrilling games, but high on resolution. The fate of the AL West and AL East were still in the balance on the very last day of the season. Early in the day, the Athletics faced off against the Rangers, with both teams in a dead heat for the AL West title. It was a close affair until the 4th inning, where a critical Josh Hamilton error opened the flood gates for the A's. It was all academic from there, with the A's winning 12-5 and completing one of the greatest comeback seasons in MLB history. The Rangers meanwhile are backing into the playoffs on the heels of a historic collapse.

Their opponent that game will be the Baltimore Orioles, who fell to the Rays 4-1. That loss clinched the AL East title for the New York Yankees, who took care of business on their end by easily dispatching of the Red Sox. Elsewhere, Miguel Cabrera elected to play the final day in a bid to secure the first Triple Crown in 45 years and to solidify his MVP chances. He succeeded on both fronts and is forever entrenched in the history books. As for the MVP? We'll find out in a few weeks if that is enough to hold off super-rookie Mike Trout.

As one of the more memorable seasons in a long, long time comes to a close, the new one-game wild card will be in full effect with the Braves taking on the Cardinals and the Orioles traveling to Arlington against the Rangers.

Recap 9/28/2012: As September winds down, the pennant races heat up, and this year is no different. The Yankees and Orioles remain in a virtual dead heat in the AL East. The Oriole's six game win streak came to a halt this week as the O's split a four game series with the down and out Blue Jays. The Yankees in the meantime have won 7 out of their last 10 to currently hold a narrow one game lead in the AL East entering the last two series of the season.

Over in the AL Central, the surging Tigers have stormed past the White Sox and now occupy first place in their division. The White Sox are running on fumes and it looks like playoffs are out of the cards this year for the south side. As for the AL Wild Card chase, the Orioles, Athletics, Rays, and Angels are all vying for the two spots. In the first year of the dual-Wild Card format, things seem to be working out perfectly as an exciting final week is surely in store.

Things are a bit calmer in the National League. The Nationals, Reds, and Giants have all maintained commanding leads in their respective divisions and little if anything will change by the end of the season. The wild card race also lacks in drama, as the Braves clinched a playoff spot this week and the Cardinals, barring a historic collapse, look to wrap up theirs pretty soon.

The Miami Marlins miss out on a chance to add to their roster, having already signed Jose Reyes to a six-year $106 million contact and bringing in Ozzie Guillen to steer the ship.
