Murder By Death - Band History

Murder By Death began in 2000 in Bloomington, Indiana as Little Joe Gould. Soon after, they signed to Eyeball Records and changed their name to Murder By Death. In 2002, the band released their debut full-length Like the Exorcist, but More Breakdancing. Some of the band's early work was bolstered by the presence of soon-to-be renowned artists. Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them? (2003) featured guest appearances from Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance, Geoff Rickly of Thursday and folk artist William Elliott Whitmore. Between 2006 and 2008, the band transitioned from Eyeball Records to Vagrant Records and in 2008, released Red of Tooth and Claw. In 2010, the band released their fifth full-length Good Morning, Magpie, their first Billboard-charting album (it peaked at number 200).

Murder By Death - The Music

Murder By Death songs range from mid-tempo folk struts to relentless alt-country tunes, but the one theme that pervades all of them is a haunting film noir atmosphere. The band is influenced by artists like Johnny Cash and Tom Waits. Front man Adam Turla sings in a baritone range in the more recent albums, echoing the same tone Cash sang in, and on In Bocca al Lupo, there is a song titled Sometimes the Line Walks You (a reference to Cash's Walk the Line). Lyrically, the band is concerned with monumental concepts like sin, good and evil, as well as cinematic images reminiscent of westerns.
