Theatrics are the Way for My Chemical Romance (Updated March 13, 2013)

It's fitting that Gerard Way, lead singer of My Chemical Romance, actually graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York before ultimately rethinking his career path. The band's appeal, in part, has been the theatrical nature of their live performances, harkening back to the days when the singer would emote the angst of a dying man while lying in a hospital bed on stage in 2006.

That macabre, doom-and-gloom façade has followed My Chemical Romance since its inception – sparked in part by the events of September 11, 2001. Within months of forming, the band had released its debut album, "I Bought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love." They made the jump from indie act to major label by 2004's "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge," followed by a CD/DVD package called "Life on the Murder Scene."

It was the 2006 concept album, "The Black Parade," however, that polarized critics for its disturbing story line surrounding a fictitious dying cancer patient. Two years later, the band was embroiled in controversy after a 13-year-old British fan committed suicide and My Chemical Romance was labeled a "suicide cult" by a major media outlet. Still, the band carried on through its second live CD/DVD compilation "The Black Parade is Dead!" and in 2009 recorded a cover of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" for the soundtrack of the film adaptation of the graphic novel "The Watchmen."

My Chemical Romance's most recent full-length project, "The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys," bowed in 2009 with a much more concrete stadium rock sound. In 2012 they began a new website initiative to release two songs each month for five months as part of the "Conventional Weapons sessions."
