Starting out in 1998 as an alt-country, rock and roll band in the footsteps of Wilco, not afraid to experiment and stretch the boundaries of genre when the whim struck them. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Jim James (James Olliges, Jr.) started the band in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, alongside his cousin, Johnny Quaid (John McQuade) on guitar and vocals, Two-Tone Tommy (tom Blankenship) on bass and J.Glenn (J. Roberts) on drums. After recording their first album, The Tennessee Fire, My Morning Jacket added keyboard player Danny Cash for the second album, At Dawn, beginning an ongoing expansion of their sound and experimentation with sonic textures. My Morning Jacket tickets even now give a chance to see a band always in the making, a group never afraid to follow their impulses for change. Their live shows turn into guitar-laden expositions with thickly layered synthesizer effects and meandering compositional sections. Gone now are the heavily reverberated effects lathered on the vocals from the band's early days.

Along with the band's compositional chops, their sound has also matured, right around the recording of their fourth album, Z in 2005, which shifts into reggae at times, such as in the song 'Off the Record,' a poppy tune with an easy hook and straightforward instrumentation. My Morning Jacket's latest album, Circuital , due for release in 2011, continues their transformation with, perhaps, a return to the grit and low-fi sound of their early days, according to James. 'There's something old and dirty-sounding about it,' he says of their latest album.
