Orlando Magic News: Regular Season and Preseason Updates

2/28/13: the Magic made one of the bigger trades at the NBA trade deadline, sending fan favorite J.J. Redick and two others to Milwaukee for Beno Udrih, Tobias Harris, and Doron Lamb. Udrih is particularly pleased with the trade, as he is now playing for his former teammate Jacques Vaughn. He felt that Milwaukee was a bad situation for him, where he simply did not get the playing minutes he wanted. With the Magic, he may get a lot more time on the floor, and establish himself for the rest of the season, and possibly even beyond.

2/21/13: Magic fan favorite Hedo Turkolu was suspended this past week for violation of the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs. Turkolu claims that a medical professional in Turkey gave him the PEDs to rehab his injured shoulder. He claims that he did not know whatever he was given was a substance banned by the NBA, and did not bother to verify with the league. Turk has only played in about 10 games this year, and has been awful. His suspension is for 20 games. But the point is, if he was going to cheat, shouldn't he have taken something that would make him better?

2/14/13: The Magic finally snapped their losing streak, ending the slide at 12 games with a 110-104 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. A few weeks ago, the Magic were 12-13, and looking somewhat competitive. But a rash of injuries to Glen Davis, Jameer Nelson, and just about anyone else who could play sent them in a big downward spiral, and the team is now 15-36, and 20.5 games out of first place in the Southeast. Orlando is heading for the best possible outcome, that is, a lottery pick to rebuild the team. But at least Magic fans can take solace in the fact that Dwight Howard is not fitting in well with the Lakers and they may miss the playoffs.

2/7/13: It has been a long time since the Magic have won a game, much less two in a row. The team is completely depleted due to injury and lack of talent. Four starters: Jameer Nelson, J.J. Reddick, Glen "Big Baby" Davis, and Aaron Aflalo are out with injury, leaving a starting line up that may not win at the college level. Davis may be out for the remainder of the season with a broken foot. To add insult to injury (literally), the Clippers came to town with Chris Paul hurt, and still decided to sit Blake Griffin. The good news is that the losing should put them in the lottery to get an impact player at the draft.

1/31/13: The Orlando Magic are almost back to full strength, but the struggles continue. The Magic have lost 14 of their past 16 games, including a 104-102 thriller at home against the Detroit Pistons. J.J. Redick had a hot hand, scoring 19 in the first half, 31 for the game, and nailing eight three-pointers. The former Duke Blue Devil was easily the team's best player that night, but head coach Jacques Vaughn inexplicably took him out of the game as the Magic were making a late run. As it stands, Orlando will be out of the playoffs, but they still need a few more losses to get into the lottery round.

1/24/13: The Magic finally have Glen "Big Baby" Davis back, but it does not seem to be helping the team too much. Orlando has lost 14 of their last 16 games, most recently 105-90 in Detroit. The loss to the Pistons is especially disheartening because the Magic had been at least competitive in most games. But the Pistons controlled this match from the outset. The only good news out of it seems be that Davis is starting to mature. He placed the blame on himself and declared that he has to play better if the Magic are going to improve. That is something that has not been seen before, and a good sign for Magic fans.

1/17/13: Orlando finally snapped their losing streak at ten games, with a strong road effort against the high-flying L.A. Clippers. The Magic are 2-0 in the Staples Center this season, having beaten the Lakers earlier on. Glen Davis is still out with an injury, but appears to be close to returning. Aaron Afflalo, in his first year with the team, is having a strong season. He is averaging over 17 points per game and over 21 in the past four. Coach Jacques Vaughn seems pleased, noting that throughout the losing streak, the team stuck together and did not start assessing blame.

1/10/13: The Magic got through the first 25 games with a 12-13 record - far better than most people expected after trading Dwight Howard in the off season. However, the team has not been able to break through that dozen win mark in the last nine tries. Glen "Big Baby" Davis is out with a hurt shoulder and the team lacks the depth to compensate for his loss. The most recent disappointment was a 125-119 overtime defeat at Portland. With point guard Jameer Nelson back in the line up,the team was competitive, but they are still looking for their first win since early December.

1/3/13: Two weeks ago, the Orlando Magic were riding a four game winning streak and were within one game of .500. But injuries to Glen "Big Baby" Davis, Jameer Nelson, and just about anyone else with a pulse have brought Orlando back to reality. The Magic are currently on a seven game losing skid, and have fallen back in the division. The Magic have a chance to set the NBA record for fewest free throws in a season. The current record is 18 per game, and Orlando is averaging 16.2. With no inside presence, there is no need to foul the Magic - and it is showing up on the stat sheet.

12/27/12: The Magic have overachieved thus far this season, and have inched close to the .500 mark on the season. However, Glen "Big Baby" Davis went down with an injury, and the team has not been able to provide a suitable back up. Orlando trotted out rookie Andrew Nicholson in Davis' place at power forward, but he could only muster six points and four rebounds. Coach Jacque Vaughn then went with Gustavo Ayon against the Jazz, a game the Magic lost 97-93. Many fans would prefer the team just lose all season to earn a lottery pick, but the organization refuses to quit this early.

12/20/12: Who needs Dwight Howard? The 2012-13 version of the Orlando Magic does not have the star power as past teams, but this team plays hard every night. Many expected the Magic to be in the cellar, but the team is 11-13, within striking distance of .500. Led by Glen (Big Baby) Davis, Jameer Nelson, and J.J. Reddick, the team has won 5 of their last 6, while watching the Lakers continue to stumble over themselves. Not even the hardiest of Magic fans believe that the team has the talent to compete for the title this year, but faithful are encouraged by the strong work ethic and blue collar approach that this no-name outfit has shown through the first quarter of the season.

12/13/12: The Magic just completed their first significant West Coast road trip, running up against former Magic franchise player and current Laker Dwight Howard. The Dwight Howard and Orlando Magic divorce got quite ugly earlier in the year, and Dwight said he had no emotion when the teams faced off. The Magic did, and they won because Dwight couldn't hit a free throw. Orlando finished the five game road trip at 3-2. While the team is not likely to make a championship run, the faithful Magic fans are thankful for small victories - like the one over the Lakers.

12/6/12: It took the Magic about a decade to recover from Shaq fleeing the franchise for the LA Lakers, and they franchise (and fans) hope it will not take that long to recover from Dwight Howard doing the same thing (OK, he was traded, but he forced the trade). But right now its Magic 1, Dwight 0. Orlando headed into the Staples Center and came out with a 113-103 victory. Aaron Afflalo led Orlando with 30 points as the Magic scored 40 points in the fourth quarter. The Magic repeatedly fouled Howard, who was only 9-21 from the line, though Dwight took no responsibility for loss after the game.

11/29/12: Perhaps the most stunning realization that the Dwight Howard era is over in Orlando is that the team trails the Charlotte Bobcats in the standings. The Magic are hardly a competitive team this season, and the fans recognize that fact. In fact, many fans are openly rooting for losses to improve the teams chances of landing a lottery pick next season. Most recently, the Magic allowed a late lead against the Boston Celtics to slip away, finally falling 116-110 in a game that obviously featured no defense. Orlando hosts the San Antonio Spurs later this week in a game that will reunite Magic head coach Jacques Vaughn with his mentor Greg Popovich.

11/22/12: The Magic continue to live up to their fans expectations in the frst Post-Dwight campaign. The team is 4-7, coming off of a 90-74 clobbering of the Detroit Pistons at home, which included a huge third quarter. The Magic scored the first 21 points of the second half and opened up a lead that the Pistons simply could not match. Orlando has picked on Detroit this year, beating them twice in the last week. The Pistons, however, are struggling mightily. The team is 2-10, and is already on life support very early in the NBA season.

11/15/12: The Orlando Magic are off to a tough start this season, which does not come as a surprise to those who follow the team. While not as bad as the 1-19 start in the 2003 season (which ultimately led them to the number one overall pick - Dwight Howard), the 2-5 start does not bode well for the franchise. After winning their first two games, the Magic have dropped the last five, including two to the Brooklyn Nets. The Magic have been without starters Jameer Nelson and Hedo Turkolu for the past week, but the lack of depth is already starting to show.

The Dwight Howard saga continues in Orlando, as Dwight Howard has once again expressed his intentions to leave after this season and sign elsewhere if the Magic do not trade him this offseason. Needing to once again reiterate his position despite the constant media coverage that has surrounded his desire to leave Orlando and the many teams in pursuit of him, Howard has still yet to find a suitor that is willing to take the chance of giving up major pieces for him in a trade, only to see him leave in free agency at the end of this upcoming season. With the Lakers backing out of trade talks recently after their acquisitions of Jordan Hill and Antawn Jamison, there now seems to be a very short list of teams still capable of dealing for Howard.

Playing without star Dwight Howard, the Orlando Magic dropped game two of their Eastern Conference playoff series against the Indiana Pacers by the score of 93-78. Glen Davis led the Magic offensively with 18 points on the game, while David West led the Pacers with 18 points as well. Davis added 10 rebounds, 1 block and a steal on the day as well. Perhaps the most alarming statistic for the Magic is that they were out-rebounded by the Pacers 26-13 in game two, a statistic that must change if Orlando wants a chance to move on into the next round. The series will move to Orlando for game three on Wednesday.

As the season comes to a close, the Orlando Magic sit at 36-28 and are entrenched in the six seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs. If the seeding holds up, the team will face off against the three seed Indiana Pacers in the first round. The team has put up somewhat mediocre offensive numbers this season, placing 21st in the league with 94.3 points per game. The team has however, played solid defense, holding opponents to only 93.4 points per game throughout the season. Orlando will be without star Dwight Howard throughout the postseason as he recovers from a serious back injury.

The Orlando Magic remain in a tight race for a playoff spot as the regular season dwindles down. Currently, the team sits as the #6 seed with a comfortable 3 game lead over #7 seed Philadelphia, but the team is just 4-6 in its last 10 games and cannot afford to continue to slip in the standings. Dwight Howard continues to provide strong offense for the squad, leading the team in four different categories averaging 20.6 points, 14.5 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 1.5 steals per game. Down the stretch, the Magic still have games remaining with the playoff-contending Celtics and 76ers.

Orlando Magic 2011 Offseason

The Orlando Magic really need to start making moves at improving their team and build a better supporting cast to suit Dwight Howard. They went 52-30 in the regular season and finished 2nd in their division to the eastern conference champs Miami Heat. However Dwight doesn't want just a good season. He wants a championship season and needs the correct players to come through in the post season. The first round loss to Atlanta was a shocker in many people's minds. Talks are also speculating that Dwight will repeat what Shaq did. He'll leave Orlando for a bigger contract and the chance to play with a young superstar and win a few championships while never bringing the hardware to Orlando.
