About Palma Violets
Are Palma Violets the 'Next Big Thing'? (Created June 13, 2013)
Many bands and artists claim to be 'the next big thing' in Indie music. But few have the credibility and popularity of Palma Violets, whose very British sound has made its way around the globe.
Though Palma Violets only formed back in 2011, this group based on the partnership of frontman Samuel Fryer and Chilli Jesson has already grown a huge fan base, thanks to their mix of rock, garage rock and psychedelic sounds. Along with keyboardist Jeff Mayhew and drummer William Doyle, their first single "Best of Friends" ran away with NME's song of the year selection for 2012, and their debut album followed on February 25, 2013.
That aforementioned album, "180," was hailed by critics and seemed to put the Palma Violets in the same category as The Libertines and The Strokes. Many said the guitar riff to "Best of Friends" instantly set the tone for the rest of the project, its sound of summer festivals and lazy days shining through.
Oddly enough, the band made headlines for saying they initially hated the single that made them breakthrough stars. Fryer himself called the song "so predictable" and said they were actually quite embarrassed to play it. But when fans reacted and labeled the song to be catchy and clever, Palma Violets issued a brand new video and later decided to re-release the track. All this is in lead-up to their supporting slot for The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park on July 6.
Palma Violets currently appear on the NME Awards Tour 2013, along with Miles Kane, Django Django and Peace.
