Big idea, right? It most certainly was. The idea of a kind of indie soft rock with unprecedented experimentation had a nice glow to it, and certainly during the year of 2000, Athens, Georgia, resident Matthew Houck wanted to emulate that idea in huge fashion, signing with the Warm label in 2003 to officially hail his work for what it was undoubtedly worth.

His first album with the name 'Phosphorescent' was called A Hundred Times or More, and it immediately hailed him as a phenomenon of music genius. 2004 saw the release of the EP The Weight of Flight, and it immediately prompted a second full-length album to come out the very next year -- this time under the Misra label -- called Aw Come Aw Wry. Houck wasn't stopping on his quest to make remarkable music, following up two years after that to release Pride under the Dead Oceans imprint. There was no doubt that there was a passion and a talent put together for this one-man band by the name of Phosphorescent.

One look at the man and his music, and you'd immediately start drawing comparisons to the quiet edginess of Bob Dylan and Will Oldham. But more importantly, Houck and his Phosphorescent outfit achieved monumental status with the London Evening Standard's declaration of him as the 'most significant American in his field since Kurt Cobain.' That's quite a statement for such a soft-spoken musician! But well-deserved.
