Trip-hop champs aim for new album (Updated January 30, 2013)
Their bright beginnings came at an unemployment office in Bristol, England. They based their early sound on spy-movie soundtracks and the whine of the Theremin. And their popularity soared behind the atmospheric aura of trip-hop – an experimental variant of breakbeat which defined Portishead.
Named after the nearby town of the same name, Portishead was founded when vocalist Beth Gibbons and keyboardist Geoff Barrow met at a job-retraining program. Along with guitarist Adrian Utley and sound engineer Dave McDonald, they began collaborating on new music using off-kilter recording techniques. The style was dubbed "trip-hop," said by Rolling Stone to be a narcotic sound, with an undertow of dub reggae, oddly skewed samples, and the studio experimentation of electronic music.
Call it what you will, but Portishead became an overnight success with the release of their debut album, "Dummy" in 1994. Not only did it garner strong interest (and sales) in Europe, but the album became an underground sensation in the United States. Three years later came the eponymous sophomore project, "Portishead," and a live album from a performance with the New York Philharmonic orchestra in 1998.
Like every band, Portishead had its rough patches. From 1999-2005, the band members concentrated on solo albums and other pursuits. Still, they came back strong when the new album, "Third" bowed in 2008. A European tour followed, with a stop at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival their only official U.S. date on the tour.
Portishead has been working on its next album for quite a while, with rumored release dates having come and gone. But the band says it was inspired on its most recent tours, and has been back in the studio since mid-2012 making new music.
