About Ravi Shankar
About Ravi Shankar tickets
After some 70 years of performing, there is little that Indian sitar player extraordinaire Ravi Shankar has not done. At age 91, he continues to perform and draw capacity crowds. Born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury in 1920 in Varanasi, India, Ravi Shankar has become the best-known Indian musician in the world, and has been an ambassador of Indian music for several decades, since his collaborations with George Harrison of the Beatles and violinist Yehudi Menuhin in the 1960s and 1970s. To listen to Shankar play the sitar is to be transformed. Not only does his music transcend time, geography and genre, but it also rises above the present, hypnotizing audiences with its insistent rhythm and other-worldly melodies. Shankar started performing at the age of 10, as a dancer with his brother, Uday Shankar's group. He learned to play several Indian instruments and toured Europe and America in the 1930s, where he discovered Western classical music and jazz. By age 18, after returning to India, Shankar gave up dancing and concentrated fully on the sitar and other Indian instruments. Having become a popular musician in India, working as a music director for All India Radio, Shankar founded the Indian National Orchestra and began composing works that combined Western styles with Indian instrumentation and harmony. In the 1950s Shankar headed abroad again on his own tours, of the Soviet Union, Europe and America. He has not stopped since, building an international audience enjoyed by few in the history of music. Even now, at age 91, his concerts are a transformational experience, as you will see with your own Ravi Shankar tickets.
