About Ricardo Arjona

Guatemalan singer/songwriter Ricardo Arjona is hailed for both his contributions to Latin American music and for his social conscience and diverse background.

Having started musical instruction at a young age, Arjona expanded his horizons when he enrolled in architecture and engineering at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC). He would eventually graduate with a degree from the School of Communication Sciences, and as a talented basketball player often toured Central America as a member of the Guatemalan national team.

Arjona officially began his music career at age 21, when he signed with record label PolyGram and released his debut project in 1985. Decades later, he has 13 studio albums, one live album and nine compilation albums to his name. His work has garnered him numerous accolades, including one Grammy Award, one Latin Grammy Award, and the "Latin Heritage Award" from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Arjona has sold more than 20 million albums to date. His music is a hybrid of everything from ballads to Latin pop, rock, Cuban, Tajano and Norteño music, as well as other Afro-American and Latin sounds. He is known for addressing topics in his songs like homosexuality, rape, racism, immigration and love. His last album, "Independiente," was released on October 4, 2011. It becamse his fourth No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart. He recently toured his home country as part of his Metamorfosis World Tour to support the project. By April 2012, the tour had played to more than 400,000 fans, including record-breaking attendance in Argentina.
