If it weren't for blues guitarist and singer Robert Cray, the blues genre would likely not be as prevalent a component of the popular music scene as it is today. Cray is largely credited for sparking a revival of the blues in the 1980s, and his crossover appeal among lovers of rock, rhythm & blues, soul, even country, and of course, blues, has introduced the core of western music to a new generation of fans. Cray was born in 1953 in Columbus, Georgia, and started playing guitar in his early teens and formed the band Steakface in high school, playing and singings songs of Jimi Hendrix and others. By age 20, Cray was a devout follower of bluesmen Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters, and formed his own blues band, the Robert Cray Band, with his longtime bassist Richard Cousins, and recorded their debut album, Who's Been Talkin', released in 1980. After signing with Mercury Records in 1982, Cray, now with a strong regional following, began to define his sound with his albums Bad Influence and False Accusations, released in 1985. But it was Cray's album Strong Persuader that jacked up his career to international stardom, and the follow-up Don't Be Afraid of the Dark in 1988 upped it another notch. Cray hasn't slowed down since, recording another dozen albums and performing hundreds of concerts a year, still with Cousins alongside.
