When you rhyme words, technically you're a 'poet.' But without a doubt, some of the best poetry to come out of anyone's mouth for years came out of the mouth of one man by the name of Saul Williams, a true Bohemian by nature, but also an award-winning screenwriter/actor. While being a simple traditional poet with the rich language he portrays in the English language, his talent earned him a deal with Rick Rubin's American Recordings in 2001 for his first ever album.

The name of his album was Amethyst Rock Star, and it broke barriers as far as what rap and hip-hop were, because he transcended all of it. Williams continued working in the music industry to infuse everything he did with rich poetry, and to this day is still considered one of the most prolific literary geniuses in the country.

And 'style' is definitely the right word to use when trying to describe the essence that is Williams. While his sound was very much lyrical and poetic, he wasn't traditional hip-hop by any stretch. There were hardly any rhymes. He was more about the imagery, about a dictated frenzy more in line with slam poetry when an individual gets up there and lashes out with those words quick and hard. Mixed with the sounds of hip-hop, it made for a winning combination. Many of Williams' songs echo in our hearts, even today.
