You don't find many of these kinds of heavy metal bands -- a band with ethnic culture added in, such as Sepultura. They hail from the humble city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where the rainforests and drums are and Capoeira kicks. Not something you'd expect out of a heavy metal outfit! Formed in 1984, when you put together the likes of lead singer Max Cavalera, drummer Igor Cavalera, bass guitarist Paulo Jr., and Jairo T. as lead guitarist, you have the makings of a truly original and iconic death/thrash metal band of the '80s and '90s. Without a doubt they pretty much solidified their chance for a record contract initally with independent label Cogumelo Records.

That is, however, a rather inaccurate comparison -- as there's no rap-metal element there. But the thrash is there, and you can hear it in their music, starting with their first LP Morbid Visions and then Schizophrenia following suit in 1987. Their first hit off the first album was a track entitled 'Troops of Doom.' Since then they had gained quite the following, particularly in Brazil itself.

They weren't just traditional heavy metal, by any stretch. Originally focusing on 'death metal' with some hardcore thrashing vocals, you could hear inspirations of Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Anthrax in their work. Additionally, Brazilian culture made them stand out with the use of the ethnic drums and sounds of Brazil succinctly added in. Sepultura has the unique style that defines them as the quintessential heavy metal band on the genre.
