Canadian country at its best: Serena Ryder was a secret success and one that no one saw coming. She was born December 8, 1983, and when she first laid her hands on a guitat in her Peterborough home in Millbrook, Ontario, something happened inside her soul. It was a calling to play music. Needless to say, she pursued the dream, and at 18 years of age actually compiled several recordings into her very own demo that made its way to CBC Radio. After garnering some attention -- specifically from a popular musician by the name of Hawksley Workman -- she was offered a contract from Isadora Records to record her first album in the year of 2002.

Her debut was the phenomenal LP Unlikely Emergency, released in 2004 in Canada and then in the following year reissued in the U.S. The songs were so fresh and beautiful in their style that Ryder earned a spot on the 2005 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame while working on a collection of covers called If Your Memory Serves You Well, which was released in 2006. After receiving the 2008 Juno Award for Best New Artist, she came out with her official sophomore album called Is It O.K. in November of 2008 and was heralded as an impressive album and worth a shot to immortality in her young career.

Although many would consider her a country artist, she had elements of punk rocker Avril Lavigne and even a flair of Ashlee Simpson thrown in for taste to better give her that unique style that made her so prominent in Canada.
