Churchill Downs, located in Louisville, Kentucky, is the historical home to the Kentucky Derby. Officially opened in 1875, Churchill Downs held the first Kentucky Derby and every one to this date. Owned by Churchill Downs Inc., the venue has also hosted the Breeders Cup on a number of occasions with the last coming in 2011. The track is named after John and Henry Churchill, who leased the land for which the venue is built to their nephew. Following the closing of the Louisville-based Oakland and Woodlawn courses, Churchill Downs was constructed to fill the void. The venue was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and has a number of recognizable features, such as the twin spires that sit above the grandstands. These spires are typically the most notable architectural pieces used to represent Churchill Downs. The actual track itself is comprised of dirt and is exactly one mile in length. The track is 120 feet wide at the starting gate and narrows to 80 feet. There is also a smaller track inside the main track made of turf that is 7/8 mile and 80 feet wide. Though no official capacity is listed, crowds can peak over 150,000 for the Kentucky Derby and typically sit around 50,000 for smaller races. Despite its long and storied history, Churchill Downs didn't hold its first night race until June 19, 2009. Along with the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs is home to the Kentucky Oaks which is a Grade I stakes race that takes place for three-year-old horses.
