Think Marilyn Manson. Think the old-school Nine Inch Nails. It's simply called 'shock rock,' a type of music that's meant to overwhelm you with imagery that can disgust you, delight in you, and even cause you to dream of the surreal. Such is the case for a particular band born in 1995 by the name of the Slipknot, the quintessential nu metal band of the late '90s. They were from Des Moines, Iowa; and the band had a nine-piece lineup of DJ Sid Wilson, drummer Joey Jordison, percussionist Chris Fehn, sampler and programmer Craig Jones, bass guitarist Paul Gray, guitarist Mick Thompson, percussionist Shawn 'Clown' Crahan, guitarist James Root, and of course frontman Corey Taylor. Roadrunner Records took notice of the band when they self-released their very first album Made. Feed. Kill. Repeat. in 1996, and the rest was history as they began their professional music career in 1997.

Upon gaining their record label and a chance to really make a difference in the hard rock music industry, Slipknot then released their self-titled debut album in 1999. Notable tracks on the album include 'Wait and Bleed' and 'Spit It Out,' earning a platinum certification for the band, Roadrunner's first platinum success ever. By 2001, Slipknot was already ready to release a second album, entitled Iowa, and even set up their own label called Maggot Recordings. There's a reason behind that name for the label, too....

One of the more unique aspects of the band was their affectionate term for the fans: maggots. Somehow that struck a major positive chord and earned the band acclaim unlike any other band before them (or after them, for that matter). In terms of the music, Slipknot combined grinding heavy alternative metal with a Marilyn Manson-style shock performance with the industrial jump suits and homemade Halloween masks they always wore.
