When it came to rock music, sometimes you had to go to basic roots to really make a statement in the industry -- such was the case for bands like R.E.M and H?sker D?. There were no frills, no theatrics, nothing but sheer talent and a need to express themselves through music. Such was the case for a little-known band called Sonic Youth. You're looking at true musicians guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo forming with bass guitarist Kim Gordon in 1981 right in the heartland of New York, Manhattan to be exact. But once they enlisted the services of keyboard player Anne DeMarinis and drummer Richard Edson, they were complete, releasing their first album under Blast First Records back in 1984.

Bad Moon Rising was their first album for the record label, and it stirred some recognition for the style of music the band was going after. EVOL came in 1986, which cemented the band into college radio immortality. They certainly had something going when 1987 saw the release of their third album Sister, specifically because Rolling Stone Magazine had their immediate praise for the material in it. Sonic Youth was so enterprising in the genre that to this day they still continue to rake in the hits.

They were innovative for one specific reason: their uncompromising creativity. While they borrowed from the indie-style free-form noise experimentalism of such bands as Velvet Underground and the Stooges, they also enjoyed a performance style that had an art aesthetic, something of a New York post-punk mentality. Dissonance was a heavy characteristic, something that sounds like Korn. Except Sonic Youth rarely rocked and thrashed like any of those bands.
