Sting transitions from rock to adult contemporary (Updated November 13, 2012)

It was after an aborted Police reunion in the late 80's that Sting seriously began working on a full solo effort. His sophomore album, "Nothing Like the Sun," bowed in 1987 and spawned the hit singles "We'll Be Together" and "They Dance Alone." It was around the time of the release that Sting began a number of charitable endeavors, including work with Amnesty International. He later founded the Rainforest Foundation, designed to raise awareness about preserving the Brazilian rainforest.

Though it seemed his music was taking a back seat to his philanthropic work, Sting also tackled a role in a failed Broadway revival of The Threepenny Opera before returning to the studio. The death of his father inspired his 1991 album, "The Soul Cages," and two years later came "Ten Summoner's Tales." The latter consisted of much lighter material, including "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and "Fields of Gold."

It was around this time that Sting began the transition from rock fans to a more adult contemporary crowd. His popularity waned until 1999's "Brand New Day," which went triple-platinum and earned him two Grammy Awards. He followed it up with 2003's "Sacred Love," before reuniting with the Police. Back-to-back solo projects in 2009 and 2010 ("If On a Winter's Night" and "Symphonicities") both cracked the Billboard album chart, each ascending to No. 6.

Sting remains a popular concert draw. In support of his last project he performed with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.
