Streetlight Manifesto was formed in 2002 by a former member of infamous ska band Catch 22, Tomas Kalnoky. Due to their affiliation with Catch 22, it did not take them long to be picked up by Victory Records. In 2003, the band released their first full-length Everything Goes Numb to critical acclaim and was able to attract fans of Kalnoky's work in Catch 22. In 2007, their album Somewhere in the Between peaked at number 154 on U.S. Billboard charts, and number 2 on Heatseeker charts. In 2010, 99 Songs of Revolution: Vol. 1 did slightly better, peaking at number 140. These numbers are indicative of the type of band Streetlight Manifesto is: Their style of music doesn't allow them much room for mainstream success, but they have nevertheless been able to build a solid fanbase in the ska punk scene.

Streetlight Manifesto is a ska punk band, so their music contains reggae-style guitars, gain vocals, and of course, lots and lots of horns. The band has seven members, four of which are in charge of playing the trumpet, trombone and saxophone. However, they do stand out from the rest of the ska punk pack in that Kalnoky writes with comparatively diverse influences. He claims to take inspiration from oldies eras like the '50's and '60's, and you only have to listen to a track like Everything Went Numb to tell that that the music often carries a strong world flavor to it.
