Late-night food fight sparks the String Cheese Incident (Created March 27, 2013)

Growing up, your childhood might have included the fascinating question, "What can you do with string cheese?" Now, as you've moved into adulthood the question becomes, "What can hear from String Cheese?"

Totally random? Then consider that the band The String Cheese Incident takes its name not from pressed curds of milk, but from a late-night food fight involving a specific kind of milk-based food product. Then there's the fact that the band hails from Crested Butte, Colorado (insert joke here?) and covers as many genres of music as you could peel layers from that string cheese stick you might be snacking on.

Bluegrass. Calypso. Country. Electronica. Funk. Jazz. Latin. Reggae. You can count them off and that's still not all you'll get from Michael Kang, Bill Nershi, Keith Moseley, Michael Travis, Kyle Hollingsworth and Jason Hann. The String Cheese Incident has been jamming together since 1996, has released eight studio albums and is considered one of America's most significant independent bands. Whether it's "Black Clouds," "Land's End," "Texas," "Jellyfish," or any other of the band's hits, its sure to be known to their large and loyal following.

The separation of String Cheese (as it were) came in 2007 as band members decided to reassess their collective and independent futures. Still, it wasn't long before they'd picked up right where they left off, and were able to find their roots again as a live band. They played the Rothbury Music Festival, the Ogden Theater, Red Rock Amphitheater and the famed Bonnaroo Music Festival by 2011, and the bus wheels kept right on turning.
