Almost seems like an oxymoron, doesn't it? Not so for the likes of singer/songwriter/guitarist Michael Sweet, drummer Robert Sweet, lead guitarist Oz Fox, and bass guitarist Timothy Gaines, the band members of none other than Stryper. The name of course stands for Salvation Through Redemption Yielding Peace, Encouragement, and Righteousness. Clever, right? You wouldn't find any other classic hard rock outfit that powers it out for God anywhere else; and obviously the Enigma label noticed, signing the band in 1984.

Their first full-length album made waves in the Christian music charts as one of the first glam classic rock elements for the genre. The LP was called Soldiers Under Command, and it was released in 1985. The second album released in 1986 was To Hell with the Devil, a platinum-certified album and considered to be the band's finest age. Along with all the changes that hard rock went through -- thrash metal with the likes of Metallica, and grunge rock with the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam -- Stryper kept moving forward, some of their hits hitting a timeless quality that could never be matched.

Take a bit of White Lion, Twisted Sister, and some Black Sabbath, and you get Stryper to a tee -- the only difference is their music positively reinforced the message of Christ! You couldn't beat that, especially if you were a Christian. Even MTV praised the band and played many of the videos for the band.
