Country duo tackles grand arena rock (Updated December 4, 2012)

When you think of grand arena rock and songs with a loud, infectious beat, bands like U2 or Coldplay might come to mind. But Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush of the country duo Sugarland felt no boundaries when they needed music and a new vibe to along with the visual components of their fourth studio album, "The Incredible Machine."
The 11-track result had a completely different feel than the duo's previous hits like "Baby Girl," "Want To" and "Settlin'." Yet it had all the pieces to mark another strong project for Sugarland, which was riding a runaway train of success by 2010. With projects like the sophomore effort "Enjoy the Ride" and the follow-up "Love on the Inside" already in the rearview mirror, not to mention Nettles teaming with Jon Bon Jovi for the smash "Who Says You Can't Go Home," the duo was ready to move in a new direction.

By the time "The Incredible Machine" was released on October 19, 2010, Sugarland had more than calmed the fears of fans anxious over descriptors like 'steampunk' to describe the album's sound. Instead, fans were quick to embrace the twang-pop lead single, "Stuck Like Glue," and the project debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts despite mixed reviews from critics. The following year, the duo performed with the likes of pop star Rihanna and folk/rock artist Matt Nathanson.

Known for their high-energy live performances and grandiose stage design, tragedy struck on August 13, 2011 when an outdoor stage collapsed due to high winds at a Sugarland concert at the Indiana State Fair, killing seven people and injuring more than 40. The duo was not on stage during the collapse, and two months later held a free benefit concert in honor of the victims. Still, they are fighting numerous lawsuits filed by family and friends of those killed.
Sugarland recently wrapped their fourth headlining tour, and will take time off due to Nettles' pregnancy. There are rumors she may pursue a solo album, but for now the duo is still together.
