As Tenacious as ever (Updated March 13, 2013)

You've been to a ton of concerts. You think you'd seen every band there is to see. And yet you've never seen anyone quite like Tenacious D, whose acoustic metal comedy act seems to be as fresh now as it was in its true beginnings.

What's so attractive about a bald, fat rock star (that'd be Kyle Gass) and his ever-hilarious, always on sidekick (Jack Black, aka JB)? Well for one, you're talking about a duo that started out in 1994 without a name, so they gave their audience the chance to vote for one. Those are the guys who haven't changed in the last two decades, who are on the "Rize of the Fenix" tour stripped down to nothing more than acoustic guitars, water bottles, a few Terrible Towels and one epically long encore, ripe for the calamitous "Dude (I Miss You)" and "Kyle Quit the Band."

It's that tour, in support of their 2012 "Rize of the Fenix" album, that is as much a celebration as it is a redemption, after their 2006 project "The Pick of Destiny" completely flopped. The comeback, as it stands, has been as unexpected and weird as it has been memorable. With no backing band to make them a full-fledged rock outfit, Tenacious D is still packing fans into clubs and still (good-naturedly) setting its sights on 'mega domes' by the end of their current tour.

Though the duo recently fell short of a Grammy win for "Best Comedy Album," they're as eager as ever to soak up the applause and adoration their comeback has garnered. Check them out at places like the Sydney Opera House (May 11-12) and Austria's Frequency Festival (August 15) in 2013.

Who would've thought comedy and rock could go together so well? Jack Black and Kyle Gass apparently did. Back in 1994, these two met in an acting class to form a 2-piece band with two guitars, their voices, and a sense of comedic style that could only be matched by Primus. The year of 2000 was the year that one label had the opportunity to sign the D on -- Epic Records. The rest was absolutely hard rock comedic history.

You're looking at some pretty funny stuff with this duo. As they played and acted on HBO with their show, their music gained ground on the music industry front -- what, with tracks like 'Sex Supreme.' Later tracks appeared in their album, like 'Tribute' and 'Wonder Boy.' They became such worldwide hits that even a film was produced, starring your very own Jack Black and Kyle Gass. Not to be raunchy and wild, but one of the D's crazier singles included 'Fuck Her Gently.' They never minced words with their music.

They were basically funny! There's no other way to describe it. Some of the lines in their music include 'Look into my eyes, and it's easy to see -- one and one make two, and two and one make three, it was destiny.' What the heck did that mean? The point was it didn't really mean anything. Comedic absurdity revolved around Tenacious D, for sure. That was their major charm.
