The Bad Plus - Band History

The Bad Plus began in 2000 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They consist of Ethan Iverson, Reid Anderson and Dave King. In 2001, they released their first album titled The Bad Plus (Motel) via Fresh Sound records. It would not be until Give (2004), however, that they would land on major charts. Give peaked at number 3 on Billboard Jazz Albums charts and number 32 on Heatseekers Albums charts. Never Stop (2010) also charted, peaking once again at number 3 on Jazz Albums charts. Backtrack a few years, however: In 2002, the band inked to major label Columbia Records and released These Are the Vistas the following year. The band parted ways with Columbia after three full-length albums and released Prog (2007) via Heads Up Records. For All I Care (2008) is perhaps their most unique release yet, featuring Wendy Lewis on vocals. The album is also chock full of cover songs. The Bad Plus - The Music

The Bad Plus combine off-kilter jazz sensibilities with rock influences, often covering songs in their albums by bands like Nirvana, Interpol, David Bowie, Neil Young and even Black Sabbath. For All I Care was their first significant experiment with vocal-led music, as most of their discography is purely instrumental. The Bad Plus is considered one of the most interesting modern day jazz acts for their propensity to push the limits with the genre.
