About The Cure
The Cure heads South of the Border (Updated April 11, 2013)
New music festivals are popping up all over the world, mixing in with the likes of Coachella and Bonnaroo. And chances are, The Cure is playing one of them in 2013. In fact, these guys are shaping up to be absolute road warriors, with their current schedule taking them everywhere from Brazil to Mexico and everywhere in between.
Some 17 years in the making, the band's trip to Latin America falls under their 'LatAm2013' tour and includes stops in places like Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Lima, and Mexico City. Officially, it marks the back of a run of 19 major European headline spots to close out 2012, which began at Pinkpop in May and ended at Eire's Electric Picnic in Ireland in September.
Logically, South America seemed like the next best place to be. But when the band returns to North America, they've got some big dates circled on the calendar. First is the Osheaga Music and Arts festival August 2-4 in Canada, followed by that previously mentioned gigantic weekend-long summer music event in Chicago's Grant Park so lovingly known as Lollapalooza.
Up for a bit of trivia? Consider this – in its long history as a rock band, The Cure has never actually performed at Lollapalooza. At their first trip to the party they'll be backed by Phoenix and Vampire Weekend, along with a list of other groups that will perform throughout the day.
Bottom line here? If you've been itching to see The Cure in person, then 2013 is your year. Make sure to get your tickets at SeatGeek to see these radically popular rockers today.
About The Cure
Credited as one of the bands that laid the groundwork for goth rock, The Cure emerged behind frontman Robert Smith in West Sussex, England in 1976. The only constant member, Smith has been notorious for his ghoulish, often macabre appearance as a complement to the band's tormented music.
Originally called the Easy Cure, Smith and schoolmates Michael Dempsey (bass) and Laurence Tolhurst (drums) landed a series of record deals behind a demo tape which featured the song 'Killing an Arab.' The band's debut album, 'Three Imaginary Boys,' was released in 1979 to mostly positive press, and that same year the Cure embarked on its first major tour.
The band's sound - and its members - would continue to evolve and change over the next several albums, morphing from dark, edgy and depressing to relatively upbeat synth-disco fare. It was the 1985 album 'The Head on the Door' which fused earlier works and up-tempo dance hits that gave the Cure its breakthrough success. The 1987 project 'Kiss, Kiss Me, Kiss Me' spawned four hit singles ('Why Can't I Be You,' 'Catch,' 'Just Like Heaven,' 'Hot Hot Hot!!!') in the U.K.
To date, the band has released 13 studio albums (including 2008's '4:13 Dream'), 10 EPs and over 30 singles. Since 2010 they have been working on a 14th studio album and continue to sell out venues whenever they tour. The Cure headlined a series of major European Music Festivals in the summer of 2012 and will play the Leeds Festival in the U.K. in late August.
