In getting into the whole hard rock genre, you're looking at many different mutations -- alternative, heavy metal, death metal, punk rock, grunge rock, glamour rock. The list goes on and on. Then there came a little something called 'ska.' And it was the mid- to late-'90s that saw it coming. At the forefront of that type of hard rock music was a band born in 1985 by the name of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Featuring the stylish talents of Tim Bridewell, vocalist Dicky Barrett, guitarist Nate Albert, bass guitarist Joe Gittleman, drummer Josh Dalsimer, saxophone player Tim 'Johnny Vegas' Burton, and dancer Ben Carr, Taang! Records took the band in during the year of 1990 to release their very first album.

THe debut album was called Devils Night Out, and it stirred some word about the whole concept of 'ska.' Still, no one really caught on, even after the follow-up in 1992 entitled More Noise and Other Disturbances was released. Everything changed, though, when 1993 hit with a major-label record deal with Mercury, and the third album Don't Know How to Party hit the stores. After landing a cameo spot in the film Clueless with Alicia Silverstone, amazingly the music took off. Two of their most well-known hits were 'Where'd You Go' and 'Someday I Suppose.' It took another four or so years for ska rock to take off -- and when some more pop-oriented ska bands came into the scene, like No Doubt and Sublime, the Bosstones broke out in a major way with the release of Let's Face It, which became the band's biggest selling album to date. The iconic single to define the Bosstones then was, of course, 'The Impression That I get.' Needless to say, the album itself went platinum.

With close ties to something of a big-band feel, ska touched on a more upbeat, laid-back, and fresh feel of the rock scene.
