About The New Deal
Live. Progressive. Breakbeat. House. This is the self-branded genre that only begins to describe The New Deal’s sound. Formed in 1998 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, The New Deal is a three-piece band consisting of Dan Kurtz (Bass Guitar), Darren Shearer (Drums, Beatbox), and Jamie Shields (keyboards, synthesizers). The band formed upon re-listening to an impromptu jam session that occurred at the Comfort Zone in Toronto, Canada. Since then, the band has released 9 recordings including their original impromptu jam session, as well as studio albums, live albums, and EP’s.
The New Deal performs live improvisational electronic music, often called livetronica. Their live shows consist of a few structured songs or jams, and mostly improvisation. The New Deal has a knack for playing off the crowd’s energy and creating triumphant peaks as well as valleys all throughout their shows.
The New Deal News – June 2011
Unfortunately, in 2011, The New Deal announced that they would be breaking it off as a band. An e-mail stated, "We have come to a point where the time and commitment that it takes to maintain our band at its best is no longer possible.” Subsequently, they have announced an extensive summer 2011 tour, making stops in major cities where they have the largest fan bases, in addition to stopping at many summer music festivals. The New Deal has also announced that they will be touring in the fall of 2011, as well as playing Jamcruise in January 2012.
