About Three O'Clock
What time is it? Three O'Clock. Again. (Created May 1, 2013)
Say 'hey!' to the band widely considered to be the greatest ever associated with the Los Angeles paisley underground scene. Ripping through the Roaring 80's, The Three O'Clock ventured into power pop and more synth-based sounds, but will forever be known for rich vocal harmonies, psychedelia and a folk rock style often imitated but never duplicated.
Did you know that before they became The Three O'Clock the band called itself The Salvation Army? At least that was their moniker when lead singer and bassist Michael Quercio got together with guitarist Louis Gutierrez and drummer Troy Howell. But following the release of a self-titled, full-length album their popularity spread. In turn, the real Salvation Army came knocking and ordered the band to change its name. Just like that, the Three O'Clock was born. They added a keyboardist and replaced the drummer, and were on their way to bigger and better things.
It's hard to summarize the career of this band with so many bright spots, but two releases by the end of '83 – "Jet Fighter" and "With a Cantaloupe Girlfriend" – became college radio favorites. Then there were the albums "Arrive Without Traveling" and "Sixteen Tambourines," in which the band shifted from its psychedelic touches to straight power pop. Still, all good things must come to an end. With a new label and a much more commercialized direction, the band hit what was most certainly a permanent skid with the over-produced "Vermillion" in 1988, and called it quits soon thereafter.
Now – fast forward to 2013, and truly psychedelic things are happening to the band. Three original members not only came together to play Coachella, but it marked their first live show together in 28 years. A standard of success came not as the room was filling up, but by the men scanning Twitter for buzz of the show. Consensus? The Three O'Clock reunion was a rousing #success, indeed.
