The Tulsa football program began in 1895. At the time, the school was known as Henry Kendall College and was located in Muskogee, OK. The school moved to Tulsa in 1907. Tulsa played in the Missouri Valley Conference, was an Independent team from 1986 to 1995 and played in the Western Athletic Conference before finally settling into Conference USA in 2005.One of Tulsa's best Conference USA years was in 2007 when the Golden Hurricane finished 10-4 and beat Bowling Green, 63-7 in the GMAC Bowl. Tulsa was the first team in NCAA history to have a 5,000 yard passer (Paul Smith) a 1,000 yard rusher (Tarrion Adams) and three 1,000 yard receivers (Brennan Mario, Trae Johnson and Charles Clay) in a single season. Smith also set a NCAA record for going 14 straight games in one season with more than 300 yards passing.

The stadium was renovated in 2007, and renamed Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium to honor the primary benefactor of the renovation as well. The stadium had a capacity of 40,000 at one point, but the renovation forced the upper section of the west stands to be removed, which dropped the capacity down to 30,000.
