Fora while in the 1970s, Uriah Heep was one of the most popular, sought-after hard rock bands in the United Kingdom. And though this hard-working band has seen more than its share of personnel changes over the years, plowing through some 30 different musicians, it has refused to close up shop, and with founder Mick Box, guitar, leading the way, Uriah Heep has become one of the most durable bands in rock. It was way back in 1967 when Uriah Heep formed, after Box, who had been playing in an L.A. band called The Stalkers, teamed with Byron and drummer Alex Napier and bassist Paul Newton and called themselves Spice. They signed with Vertigo Records and changed their name to Uriah Heep, after a character from Charles Dickens' David Copperfield, then moved to London to record their debut album, Very 'eavy? Very 'umble, which was titled Uriah Heep for its U.S. release. Though the debut established their heavy, thick, organ-and-guitar sound, it wasn't well-received by critics. Their second album, Salisbury, fared much better as it placed them squarely in the progressive rock genre, exemplified by the track 'Lady in Black,' which became a hit in Europe. But it wasn't until the release of their fourth album Demons and Wizards in 1972 that Uriah Heep started to gain traction both commercially and critically. To this day, that album continues to be a favorite among fans and an example of the band's best sound. After that album, the band hit climbed toward its peak, releasing five albums over the next three years. And though their popularity isn't what it was in their prime, Uriah Heep knows how to put on electrifying live shows after more than thirty years in the business.
