'The greatest living singer of Mexico' (Updated January 9, 2013)

Vicente Fernandez has been called the greatest living singer of Mexico, known for an operatic vocal range and promotion of ranchera music. A singer, producer and actor, he appeared in dozens of Mexican films, captured seven Latin Grammy Awards and continues to perform in sold-out venues around the world.

While he dreamed of a singing career at a young age, and later performed in contests as a teen, Fernandez didn't sign his first recording contract until the summer of 1966. His career took off with hits like "Tu Camino y El Mi," "Perdi" and "Cantina del Barrio." His numerous album releases would all achieve significant sales, and the success allowed him to break into acting in 1971.

By the early 90's, Fernandez had appeared in over 20 films and recorded on nearly 100 albums for Sony BMG. He also continued to top the charts with cuts like "Aunque me Duela el Alma" in 1995 and "Me Voy a Quitar de En medio" in 1998. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was also inducted into the Billboard magazine Hall of Fame.

In the U.S., Fernandez is often compared to the incomparable Frank Sinatra due to his longevity and a career that has spanned over five decades. Known for a trademark charro suit, wide-brimmed hat, magnetic stage presence and the accompaniment of a mariachi band, Fernandez continues to perform at venues around the world. His lone date thus far for 2013 is a performance at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on March 24.
