Admit it -- these guys were fun to watch. Founded back in 1977, they were the pinnacle of disco music! They were called the 'Village People.' Name one person that would say they never heard of this band. You'd be hard-pressed to find one. It started off like this: producer Jacques Morali in that fateful year of 1977 found it necessary to attract the gay audiences of the time -- and rightly so. Some say the band glorified the sexual orientation -- others say the band exploited it. No matter how you slice it, the Village People came out.

Yes, they came out of it in a big way. With hits like 'San Francisco (You Got Me)' hitting it big in England and then tracks like 'Macho man' in the States, you couldn't deny the infection that was the Village People. It was a good infection, though, seriously! But no one, not one soul in the universe, could deny the popularity of the song 'Y.M.C.A.'! it single-handedly made the recreation center itself popular enough to attract aliens from outer space. Another pop smash that unfortunately (or fortunately) stamped a stereotype on sailors was the song 'In the Navy.'

Truly, overtly gay underpinnings. That explained them in a nutshell. There was nothing sly about them, really. The Village People, basically, were the likes of a cowboy (a cheezy one, not the Clint Eastwood kind), a biker (and not a 'violent' one either), a soldier (with panache and flamboyance, of course), a policeman (obviously with some sexual innuendo), and a construction worker wearing a hard hat (just plain funny). Imagine these guys on stage, and you'd understand why they were so entertaining!
