the Los Angeles band War has endured longer than most bands, surviving through punk, New Wave, disco, hip hop and a slew of other musical movements, always playing their special brand of rock, laced with funk, jazz, Latin, rhythm and blue and reggae. When they started out in 1969, Eric Burdon, formerly of the Animals, teamed up with original War members, guitarist Howard Scott drummer/vocalist Harold Brown. The original War band members were about spreading the word of peace and harmony, and took the name War as an ironic reflection of their message. With Eric Burdon as front man, the band began touring around Southern California before recording their debut album, Eric Burdon Declares 'War' in 1970. The album included the hit 'Spill the Wine,' and the band's career was off and running. Riveting live shows quickly built a widespread fan base for War, across the United States and Europe. War recorded one more album with Burdon, titled The Black Man's Burdon, released later in 1970, before Burdon left the band, abandoning them in the middle of a European tour. To the rest of the band's surprise, their shows sold out without Burdon and they continued on to greater success, recording hits ''Cisco Kid,' 'Gypsy Man,' then, from their seventh album, Why Can't We Be Friends?, released in 1975, came the hits 'Low Rider' and the enormously popular title track, which continues to receive airplay and covers today.
