Country singer and songwriter Wynonna Judd, who has gained the iconic status to become known simply as Wynonna, is a true American rags-to-riches story. After a very poverty-stricken childhood, she has risen to the pinnacle of country music stardom, building an impressively loyal fan base worldwide that rushes to buy her albums and attends her concerts in droves. Born Christina Claire Ciminella in 1964 in Ashland, Kentucky, Wynonna's mother, Naomi, was still in high school, and though she married to try to make a traditional family unit, it didn't last and she raised her daughter as a single mom most her years. Both mother and daughter were blessed with stellar singing voices, and after receiving a guitar for a gift she learned to play and sing close harmonies with her mother. Soon, Naomi and Wynonna Judd moved out of their bare-bones Kentucky mountain home, where listening to country music on the radio had been their sole entertainment, to Nashville to pursue a musical career as The Judds. The rest is history as The Judds soared to the top of country music fame in the 1980s, charting 23 hit singles and eight studio albums and winning five Grammy Awards. Naomi Judd retired from music in 1991 after announcing she has chronic hepatitis C, prompting Wynonna to go solo, and she has broadened her sound since, recording a dozen albums on her own, including the compilation album Love Heals, released in 2010, as her fan base has remained loyal and steadfast.
