Premiering on Broadway for a limited engagement, 33 Variations is a play inspired by the music of Beethoven. Starring Jane Fonda as Katherine and Grenier Malcolm as Beethoven, the story examines Beethoven's creative process while composing the Diabelli Variations as well as the process of modern musicologist Katherine Brandt who strives to discover why the legendary Beethoven decided to write thirty-three variations on a simple theme by Anton Diabelli. The Broadway production debuted at the Eugene O'Neil Theatre from March 2009 to May 2009. The show also received various Tony nominations, including Best Leading Actor (Malcolm) and Best Leading Actress (Fonda), and won for Best Scenic Design (Derek Mclane).
