A Bronx Tale Details

When it comes to theater, it doesn’t get any more New York than Chazz Palminteri’s classic A Bronx Tale. The play tells the story of Calogero Anello, a working-class kid from the Bronx, deals with coming-of-age themes such as father-son relationships and the temptations of crime. First staged Off-Broadway as a one-man show in the ‘80s, the play was adapted for a 1993 film starring Palminteri and Robert De Niro that launched to Palminteri to success as a screen actor; he went on to star in movies like The Usual Suspects and Analyze This. In 2007, Palminteri brought the solo show to Broadway, where he starred in 108 performances before taking the play on a national tour.

Audiences today have the chance to experience the timeless uptown tale in a whole new way, as Palminteri teamed with Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast) and Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid, Sister Act) to adapt A Bronx Tale into a Broadway musical at Longacre Theatre on West 48th Street. The show brings in a variety of new perspectives thanks to its expansion from a one-man affair, including those of Colagero’s father Lorenzo, played by Richard A. Blake (Jersey Boys) and local thug Sonny, played by Nick Cordero (Bullets Over Broadway). Hudson Loverro plays Young Calogero, and Bobby Conte Thornton plays the role of his teenage counterpart. The New York Times labeled the show as an NYT Critic’s Pick in December of 2016. “Public service announcement: If you’re already mourning the imminent closing of ‘Jersey Boys,’ this is the show for you,” writes critic Charles Isherwood.
