ACC Football Championship Details

Before the 2005 season, the champion of the ACC conference was the team with the best record at the end of the season. The conference didn’t have the numbers it needed to be able to hold a separate championship game, so it had no choice. The regular season champions were considered the ACC champions.

But then before the 2004 season, both Virginia Tech and Miami joined to bring the number of conference members up to 11 teams. Following the ’04 season, Boston College joined the league, allowing the conference to split into two divisions and begin holding a championship game following the 2005 regular season.

The first game pitted Florida State and Virginia Tech against each other and saw the Seminoles come out on top 27-22. In the early years, the Hokies were a mainstay in the game appearing in five of the first seven championship matchups and winning three of them.

There has been no significance to the location of the game. The conference has simply taken bids from cities interested in hosting the game and decided who should host the game based on those bids.
