About Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra
Antibalas continues tour with Zap Mama
Hard work continues to pay off for the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. They're on a tour right now playing indoors at some pretty big venues. Not a big deal, right? It is if the last time you played that area, you played in the parking lot instead.
As an interview with Tribune Total Media recently said, 'It's nice to have a roof over your head.' The 14-piece band that is now capturing the imagination of American audiences has been touring with Zap Mama, providing heavy rhythmic pulse to get fans moving. Both acts, however, are sharing the stage but performing separate sets.
"It's an interesting confluence of the masculine and the feminine energy," band leader Martin Perna said in the Tribune Total Media interview. "We do have a lead vocalist, but if you look at the musical space the vocals take up in Antibalas, it's very small. All of our compositions aren't centered round him. "It's more like a jazz orchestra. To bring this feminine energy, but with a nuanced, dense vocal component, is fresh."
Perna also noted how the tour is playing to an 'entirely different type of audience' in performing arts venues instead of regular arenas. The tour continues in 2015 with Zap Mama and Antibalas back on the road beginning February 3 in State College, PA at Eisenhower Auditorium. They'll end the month on February 27 at Lee Ross Capshaw Auditorium in El Paso, Texas.
Antibalas find the rhythm (Created May 29, 2013)
Antibalas has done for Afrobeat what Riverdance has done for Irish step-dancing. And believe us when we tell you that the Antiblas Afrobeat Orchestra is a harmonious cacophony of sound – a true wonderment of rhythm coming together.
Some 15 years after their first gig, and just a year removed from their last album, 2012's "Antibalas," this group continues to showcase an amazing and wholesome musical strength. They now have five full-length projects to their name, not to mention eight EPs and some 19 compilations. Then there are the band members – a dozen strong at the moment, including everyone from Eric Biondo on trumpet to long-time manager Phillip Ballman on drums.
Watching and listening, it's hard to believe Antibalas has graduated from an old factory loft to become pioneers of Afrobeat, and that their sound can now be heard around the world. They play about 50 shows a year across the globe, and the band's members have recorded and performed with some of the biggest names in music, including the late Amy Winehouse, The Roots, the Black Keys and so many more.
The band resumed a heavy touring schedule beginning in the spring of 2012, making their debut in Brazil by performing in Sao Paulo and Recife. Later, they kicked off a US tour at the Outsidelands Festival in San Francisco followed by a tour of California. On August 24, 2012, Antibalas made their national television debut, performing their single "Dirty Money" on NBC's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." In September, they resumed their US/Canada tour with 30 dates in the Midwest, East Coast, Southeast and Gulf Coast, including the Austin City Limits Festival.
Antibalas kicked off a tour of Australia in March 2013.
