Arizona Diamondbacks Details
With talent throughout the order, the Diamondbacks feature one of the National League’s most powerful and promising lineups. Center fielder A.J. Pollock is back on the field after missing 2016, bringing with him the glove, bat and speed that make him one of the most well-rounded stars in the National League. Paul Goldschmidt is also one of the league’s most versatile at his position, as the perennial All-Star is one of only three first basemen in league history to have posted both 20 home runs and 20 steals in multiple seasons. Third baseman Jake Lamb and right fielder Yasmany Tomas combined for 61 homers in 2016, injecting serious power into a lineup that was fifth in the NL with 752 runs scored. There’s plenty of potential in the rotation, as well, as Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller have some of the best stuff in the league when they’re in top form.
Along with Tampa Bay, Arizona is MLB’s youngest franchise, as it has played in Phoenix’s Chase Field since its addition to the league in 1998. The name “Diamondbacks” was chosen in a naming contest put on by the team, with other finalists including “Rattlers” and “Scorpions.” It didn’t take long for the organization to find success, as a roster led by Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling upset a heavily favored Yankees team in seven games. Just four seasons into its existence, Arizona had become the fastest expansion team to ever win a title. The D-backs have won five NL West titles, the most recent coming in 2011.
