Atlanta Braves Details

The Braves franchise has existed in one form or another since 1871, and the team was a founding member of the National League in 1876. The franchise originated in Boston and began calling itself the Boston Braves in 1912. The Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953 and finally to Atlanta, where they still call home, in 1966.

The Braves were one of the most dominant teams in baseball during the 90s and early 2000s. Their all-star pitching was notoriously difficult to play against, and three Braves pitchers (Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, and John Smoltz) won six Cy Young awards between 1991 and 1998. Between 1991 and 2005, the Braves won the National League East division title a record 14 consecutive times. In 1995, in their third trip to the World Series since their division-winning streak began, the Braves won their first World Series title since the team moved to Atlanta. The Braves defeated the Cleveland Indians in six games. Future Hall of Famer Tom Glavine recorded two wins, including eight shutout innings in the final game, and was crowned World Series MVP. The Braves made return trips to the World Series in 1996 and 1999 but were defeated both times by the New York Yankees.

The Braves moved into SunTrust Park at the start of the 2017 season. The Braves defeated the San Diego Padres in the first regular season game hosted at the park. Braves’ center fielder Ender Inciarte recorded a number of milestones during Opening Day 2017: he hit the first home run in the stadium, and also recorded the first out and the first hit.

Atlanta Braves Top Matchups

The Atlanta Braves have a number of exciting matchups this season, see below for their top rivalries.

The Braves are America's most popular baseball team

According to a SeatGeek study published at the start of the 2019 MLB season, the Atlanta Braves are the team with the most shopped-for tickets in 515 counties, making them the clear MLB winner by a wide margin. The Braves dominate the Southeastern United States, controlling most or all of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, along with significant chunks of Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida. In all, the Braves are represented in nine states, more than any other team. Notably, of those nine states, only two — Georgia (the Braves) and Florida (the Rays and Marlins) — have MLB teams.

The Braves are also the number one team in the most out-of-state counties, as the aforementioned popularity across the Southeast means that 360 of the team’s 515 total counties are in states outside of Georgia — a bigger number than any other team.
