Atlanta Braves Details
The Braves have a long and storied history. They started out as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871, and stayed in Beantown until 1953, when the franchise—at that point called the Braves—moved to Milwaukee. In 1966 it moved to Atlanta, where it’s been ever since. The organization won World Series titles in 1914 and 1957—in Boston and Milwaukee, respectively—and has had plenty of success in Atlanta. Since moving to Atlanta, the Braves have won 22 division titles—including a run of 14 straight from 1991-2005—five pennants and a World Series in 1995.
Led by manager Brian Snitker, the Braves will be playing their first season in brand-new SunTrust Park after 19 years in Turner Field. The club has a terrific mix of veterans and exciting young players. First baseman Freddie Freeman is one of the best hitters in baseball, 23-year-old Dansby Swanson is the future at shortstop and Matt Kemp, Nick Markakis and offseason acquisition Brandon Phillips are established major leaguers with impressive track records. The ace of the pitching staff is right-hander Julio Teheran, and the middle/back of the rotation is as interesting as any in baseball. R.A. Dickey, 42, throws a devastating knuckleball and Bartolo Colon, 43, is an ageless wonder who always entertains on the mound—you just never know what the big guy will do next. General manager John Coppolella is continuing to build for the future, but in the present he’s put together a team that should contend right away.
